Heart disease is the third leading cause of death in pets today. Because the initial stages of heart disease develop without causing obvious signs of illness, we may think of heart disease as being less worrisome. The truth is, heart disease requires early intervention, before your pet shows signs of illness. This is one of the many reasons we recommend health examinations twice a year for older pets. If we detect an irregular heartbeat or a new heart murmur, we can plan chest radiographs and an electrocardiogram (ECG) to determine the current stage of the disease. Medication and diet adjustments may be necessary at this point to help support the heart's function. We establish reference points that are invaluable when charting the changes associated with this progressive disease. A periodic review of the chest radiographs and ECG help guide adjustments in the treatment plan. Echocardiograms (ultrasound) are occasionally necessary to help plan effective disease management. With early detection, proper diagnostics, and effective management we would expect to keep your pet active and happy for years.
