Arthritic disease is one of the most serious problems facing our aging canine
friends. The bigger they are, the more likely they are to have arthritis develop
to crisis proportions. Adequate mobility is essential to their physical health
and mental well being. Their quality of life depends on effective pain
management.
Most of our arthritic companions suffer in silence. You will rarely hear them
whine or whimper. Usually, the careful observer will notice increasing
difficulty rising after they have been laying for a while. We might see a
hesitancy when they are approaching stairs or a reluctance to go on their
regular walk around the neighborhood. They might seem cranky when around
children because it is more painful when they are bumped or tugged. This reduced
level of activity increases the likelihood of weight gain, accelerating the the
progression of the disease.
Fortunately, newer therapeutics have been developed that have a tremendous
potential to relieve the suffering of our arthritic pets. Our current
medications have outstanding pain relief potential with a fraction of the risk
associated with previous arthritic medications. With proper management, your pet
can act years younger. Their attitude can brighten, their energy level and
enthusiasm for life can be dramatically transformed.
We are currently recommending:
Cosequin® - an oral cartilage protectant
Adequan® - an injectable cartilage protectant
Rimadyl® - an oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
Etogesic® - also an oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
The more potent medications, Rimadyl® and Etogesic®,
are not without some potential for side-effects. Although most dogs can be on
these medications for years without any problems, a few will not tolerate these
medications at all. Side-effects can include vomiting, diarrhea, and liver
disease. Any sustained use of these products should be part of a comprehensive
program that includes periodic visits and screening tests to monitor the
patient. This allows us to adjust or change medications before any serious
issues develop.
If you feel that your pet is exhibiting signs that might be due to arthritis,
please call the office to set up an appointment with one of our doctors. Don't
leave your aging friend to suffer in silence. I can tell you from first hand
experience how much difference these medications can make. My aging golden
retriever, Brie, was very arthritic in her left hip. Without Rimadyl®
and Etogesic®, she would not have been able to spend the last
year and a half with us. It was like a new lease on life for her, and a blessing
to our family.
